"This is the biggest event since the railway came to town!" Matt Kean
It was a big day for the residents of Cowan last week when the Minister for Finance …… , Sydney Water …., Matt Kean MP And locals Brooke Jay and Jerome Gomez got the good news that at long last the Sewer was coming to their town.
The Finance Minister said, "The work on sewerage connection for Cowan will be commenced in 2012/14." This commitment by the government is a year earlier than originally proposed.
"The work will go out for tender at least a year earlier; in 2012/13," the Minister said.  " This commitment is a year earlier than originally proposed and there is a $300 million commitment to both Cowan and Galston to connect these areas to the sewerage."
"Matt Kean and Cowan resident Jerome Gomez have been  instrumental in this move to connect the 230 homes in Cowan to the sewer," the Minister said.
Jerome Gomez, a resident of Cowan for 32 years, said, "This news is great! Fantastic! A lot of people said connection to the sewer in Cowan would never happen in my lifetime, and here it is!"
Mr Gomez went on to say, " I think that a Liberal government in office together with a local Liberal representative is why this has finally happened."
This is not to underestimate the ongoing representation by former local MP and Matt Kean’s predecessor Judy Hopwood who lobbied for sewerage connection for Cowan for many years.
Matt Kean MP said, "Sewer connection for Cowan is the biggest event locally since the railway came to town!"
He continued to say, "Connection to the sewer for Cowan was one of my election commitments and I am pleased with the Minister who has fought for it on our behalf."
Cowan resident Brooke Jay said, "This is great news for the residents of Cowan.  It will be a big financial relief for us as a family as we are paying up to $200 per month for the pumpout service, but still have to pay the same amount of council rates as ratepayers already connected to the sewer."
Brooke continued, "Not being connected to the sewer is also a public health issue which will now be resolved.  It’s fantastic news for families in Cowan!"
